I was scrolling these social media streets the other day just to catch up with the gist and know what’s trending. Most of my feed is church stuff (I guess it’s the algorithms) and as I scroll through I remember something Jesus said, ‘It is not what goes into a man’s mouth that makes him unclean but rather that which proceeds from his mouth.’
We live in the information era and so much of it is readily available at our
disposal. It is both a good and bad thing because if we don’t watch out, we will end up consuming too much negative
information such that negativity is the only thing we see (you are what you
eat, no?) Paul says ‘faith comes by
hearing’ and therefore our ears are the gateway to what we believe
in and the more you hear about something the more you believe it is the norm.
We have normalized so many ills as a society just because it is what has been
given airtime. One time my friend Moh and I were talking and I told her
that if we keep listening to bad news every time, then our lives will be shaped by that. Imagine constantly watching interviews of
broken marriages, shattered dreams or the various evils in society. You will end
up losing faith in some glorious institutions like marriage and family only because
that is what you see.
The best way the devil can catch us is by what we watch and listen to, it is no surprise then how corrupted most movies and songs are lately.
It is a scheme and if we do not tread carefully then we will find ourselves
strayed from the ways of old, remember the words of Jesus about the end days
how ‘the love of many will grow cold’?
We should, therefore, be alert to these evil machinations and weaponization of
the media against our minds. Paul says ‘for
we are not ignorant of the schemes of Satan.'
I am not saying that we all turn on notifications for church
content (it’s advisable) but that we need to watch what we allow into
our minds because whether we like it or not, they are seeds planted and the more we keep allowing such into our lives, the more it
keeps growing roots and one day we will wake up and not understand how we got
this deep. It may be something as harmless as (I will leave that blank) but you’d
be surprised.
Curate your feed, filter what comes in and allow only that
which is beneficial. Then you will see your life blossom, your thoughts will be
watered by that which you find good for you and in extension your life since
they say we are our thoughts. In no time the transformation will be visible and
everyone will want to taste of your fruit. So start weeding this garden, let
the nutritious in and block the poisonous out.
Wow! This is well said. (As a man thinks, so he is. Proverbs 23:7)
